A Barbed Broach is a specialized dental instrument used in endodontic (root canal) treatment to effectively remove pulp tissue from the canal. This delicate extirpating tool is made from round stainless steel wires with notches along its surface, forming barbs that are designed to engage and remove soft tissue from the canal.
Key Features of Barbed Broach
-
Material:
- Made from high-quality stainless steel, ensuring durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of sterilization.
- Designed with an ergonomic hand grip for better control during the procedure.
-
Instrument Type:
- Classified as a finger/hand instrument, the barbed broach is operated manually, providing tactile feedback during the removal process.
-
Motion:
- The broach is used in a filing motion (push-pull), where the barbs snag the pulp tissue, allowing for easy removal.
- Important: Avoid using a watch-winding or rotational motion, as this can cause the instrument to break.
-
Design and Structure:
- The broach is manufactured from a tapered round shaft with elevated barbs that engage the pulp tissue. These barbs are highly fragile and must fit loosely in the canal to prevent damage or breakage.
- Equipped with a non-cutting pilot tip, ensuring that the broach does not enlarge the canal or damage surrounding structures.
-
Size:
- Available in various sizes, each color-coded with ISO-standard handles for easy identification.
-
Disinfection:
- The instrument is autoclavable at 135°C, making it reusable and ensuring infection control.
Directions of Use
-
Selection:
- After gaining access to the root canal, select the largest barbed broach that fits loosely in the canal without engaging the canal walls. A snug fit can cause the delicate barbs to flatten against the shaft, leading to difficulty in removal or instrument breakage.
-
Operation:
- Use the broach in a filing (push-pull) motion. Gently advance the broach into the canal and engage the pulp tissue by pulling back.
- Avoid excessive pressure to prevent damaging the fragile barbs or the instrument from breaking inside the canal.
-
Precaution:
- Never use a watch-winding or twisting motion as this could result in the broach breaking inside the canal, posing complications for retrieval.
Safety and Handling
- Autoclavable: The barbed broach is reusable and can be sterilized in an autoclave at 135°C to maintain cleanliness and prevent cross-contamination.
- Latex-Free: The instrument is latex-free, making it safe for use with latex-sensitive patients.
